The Compliance Operations Intern reports to the Program Planning Officer overseeing online curriculum. The PPO is also responsible for tracking the state and federal regulations defining distance education and ensuring the university complies with them. The intern assists the unit’s compliance professionals with research and data management support. Under direct supervision, the position will communicate with UNM colleges, schools and branches, external organizations such as the New Mexico Higher Education Department (NMHED), the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA), and state licensure boards; participate in regular statewide meetings that connect distance education compliance professionals across New Mexico; and otherwise foster industry relationships to share insight and resources.

UNM Online is looking for someone who is organized and detailed-oriented, has excellent written and interpersonal communication skills, has an interest in the regulatory landscape of online learning, and the ability to compile engaging resources for widely diverse audiences. Preferred candidates will have knowledge of higher education and proven experience researching law and policy.

The position may be eligible for some remote work but requires in-person meetings on campus, across Albuquerque, and around the state.

Assignments for this position will include:

  • Assist Compliance Operations Specialist in researching, monitoring, and analyzing current and upcoming compliance legislation and regulations that impact higher education as they relate to distance education, professional licensure, and other higher education compliance topics.
  • Assist Compliance Operations Specialist in researching and analyzing regulations and requirements associated with professional licensure across the United States for all UNM licensure programs curriculum.
  • Assist in developing guidelines, handbooks, and other resource materials for academic and support units offering online programs for the University of New Mexico, especially for academic units with curriculum that leads to pre, post, and/or professional licensure.
  • Research and analyze general and specific compliance issues as required by management, and compliance practices as appropriate.
  • Prepare reports on general and specific compliance issues as required by management.
  • Assist in development, preparation, and presentation of compliance reports; maintains comprehensive compliance records.
  • Be able to follow complex, detailed technical instructions

Duties:

  • Provides entry- to intermediate-level professional services, under supervision of professional staff personnel, as appropriate to the day-to-day operating objectives of the unit.
  • Undertakes and/or participates in projects and programs designed to develop professional skills and expertise appropriate to the needs of UNM Online.
  • Participates in the planning and implementation of unit projects and initiatives within distance education compliance.
  • Interacts directly with colleagues, clientele, and/or other internal or external constituencies in the planning of assignments and the resolution of day-to-day operational problems.
  • Receives guidance, training, and mentoring from professional personnel in planning and carrying out activities and assignments.
  • As appropriate to the position and as specified by unit management, conducts original research and prepares reports based on findings, to include recommendations or alternative proposals for action.
  • May undertake related professional development as appropriate to the specific objectives of the operating unit.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment
  • Must present transcripts prior to a formal offer being extended.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University’s influenza vaccination requirement.
  • This is a fixed-term position, typically up to 24 months.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or a Master’s degree obtained no more than 24 months prior to the date of hire; no previous work experience required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Higher education experience related to distance education/online learning.
  • Strong interest in state, federal, and international regulations as they relate to higher education.
  • Interest or experience in legal research and policy analysis.
  • Experience writing professional documents such as memos, white papers, guidelines, procedures, handbooks, web pages, or other resource materials.
  • Operational knowledge of collaborative
    digital tools, such as SharePoint, video/web conferencing, Google Docs, or
    other tools.
