Washington
  • Full Time

The University of Washington’s School of Environmental and Forest Sciences (SEFS) is seeking a full-time (100% FTE) postdoctoral researcher to work with an interdisciplinary team to develop global wood product supply chain models. The position will be an initial 24-month appointment with the possibility of extension. The Postdoctoral Scholar will be associated with the Center for International Trade in Forest Products (CINTRAFOR) within SEFS and contribute to a broad base of research projects, including global wood products supply chains and related econometric modeling. The successful candidate will be involved primarily in a research project that will provide a comprehensive assessment of the global supply chain for mass timber construction projects, considering construction capabilities, manufacturing capacity, and the reliable supply of sustainable raw materials. The focus of the project is on the mass timber supply chain and the regional capacities to reliably and sustainably deliver mass timber materials (including cross-laminated panels, glued, laminated beams, and other mass timber construction materials) rather than the technical and performance issues of mass timber construction materials which will vary by project.

The application review process for this position will start a month from the posting date, with priority consideration for applications received by then. However, applications will still be considered on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

The expected start date will be July 15, 2024 (open to negotiations)

Job duties/responsibilities

The postdoctoral researcher would be engaged in the following scholarly and research activities:

  1. Map mass timber projects worldwide and develop a database of contractors and designers involved.
  2. Investigate mass timber material manufacturing locations.
  3. Develop a summary assessment of the global supply chain for relevant mass timber products, emphasizing regional manufacturing and supply capacity and potential constraints.
  4. Support the research activities of the environmental impact assessment of the project’s mass timber supply chains component.
  5. Mentor CINTRAFOR graduate students.
  6. Write research reports and project activity reports,
  7. Write scholarly reports for publication in peer-reviewed journals and present research results at relevant academic conferences.

Compensation

The salary range for this position will be $66,000 to $70,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
