Summary:

Global Packaging serves Hollister and its product end users by providing packaging engineering expertise to develop optimized and compliant packaging systems. We help our organization drive cost competitiveness, improve operating efficiencies and effectiveness, and sustain performance in quality, service, and product commercialization. 

 

The Packaging Engineering Intern will contribute to Hollister’s growth, profitability, and continuity by supporting medical device packaging activities for the Ostomy and Continence Care business units and associated manufacturing sites, including new product development and commercialization, and changes to existing products.  This includes packaging and labeling system development, manufacturing, and performance to the point of end use.  They will also support business unit and departmental continuous improvement objectives.

 

This position reports into Global Packaging at corporate headquarters in Libertyville, IL.

 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Apply basic knowledge, under supervision, on concepts, principles, and technical capabilities for projects of limited scope and complexity.
  • Support cross-functional projects for new product commercialization and changes to existing products.
  • Prepare samples and perform packaging laboratory testing including distribution simulation, integrity testing, and seal strength measurement, etc.
  • Compile and analyze data.
  • Support qualification of new packaging materials and/or equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with medical device packaging regulations and standards.
  • Write and coordinate technical documentation, including protocols, reports, specifications, and original data.
  • Support validation of packaging test equipment.

Work Experience Requirements:

  • Number of Overall Years Necessary: 0-1
  • Required coursework: Plastic Packaging, Paper Packaging
  • Preferred coursework: Medical Packaging, Packaging Laws and Regulations, Distribution Dynamics, Statistics
  • Technical writing
  • Design of experiment
  • Basic statistical analysis
  • Packaging configuration optimization
  • Familiar with test methods for materials, integrity, physical properties, distribution simulation, and aging
  • Familiar with flexible and rigid material performance and selection
  • Familiar with fiber-based materials, including paperboard and corrugate
  • Familiar with automated and/or manual packaging processes (forming, loading, sealing, closing, etc.)

 

Education Requirements:

  • Enrolled toward a Bachelor of Science or Master of Science in Packaging

 

Specialized Skills/Technical Knowledge:

  • Familiar with ASTM D10 and F02.  Familiarity with ISO 11607 desirable.
  • Familiar with CAPE or TOPS.  Experience with JMP, Minitab, Qumas, SAP or similar desirable.

 

Local Specifications (English and Local Language):

  • Fluent in English
