The Baltimore Banner is a nonprofit newsroom founded to bring high-quality local journalism to the Baltimore metro area. We are creating a vibrant, strong, trustworthy, and sustainable news organization, seeking to re-imagine the future of local news. Using a multi-platform news operation, covering a broad range of topics from local government to culture and the arts. We tell stories that reflect the community, connecting neighbors, holding government institutions accountable, and making sense of the world. All this work is grounded in truth. We believe we can contribute to a more vibrant, informed, and whole Baltimore, surrounding counties, and the state of Maryland

Eligibility Requirements for 2025:
To be eligible, applicants must be college juniors, seniors, or graduate students enrolled in a degree program. Additional qualifications include:
- Experience at a college newspaper or previous internship
- Strong clips or other body of work
- Clear and concise writing skills or strong photography and social media skills
- Knowledge of emerging trends in journalism and digital communications
- Strong research, quantitative, or qualitative skills
- Openness to new ideas and constructive feedback
- Willingness to learn from veteran journalists and editors
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team member
- Flexibility to adjust to the changing news cycle
- Capability to learn about new subjects quickly and accurately
- Legal authorization to work in the United States; sponsorship will not be provided for this position.

Internship Positions Available:
Photojournalist – We are looking for a creative photo intern who can bring our stories to life through visuals and across platforms – whether it’s through Instagram , TikTok, videography, or other digital media. We’re seeking someone who thrives on collaboration, embraces challenges, and thinks outside the box. You’ll work closely with our editors, but you’ll also have the freedom to pitch and pursue your own projects. From quick-turn daily assignments to a personal “passion project,” you’ll develop skills in digital storytelling, sourcing, and interviewing. Plus, you’ll be paired with a mentor and attend weekly workshops that will help you sharpen your skills . If you’re eager to engage a new generation of readers with compelling visual storytelling, we’d love to see what you can do!
Arts and Culture Reporter – The Banner newsroom is looking for an arts and culture intern to join us in our newsroom this summer. Interns will be responsible for writing about creative scenes throughout the Baltimore area and covering the region’s art institutions, including (but not limited to) theaters, music halls, art galleries and museums. Reporters should also be prepared to write daily, news stories in addition to longer-term features. They should be able to develop outside-the-box ideas and have strong digital storytelling skills. Each intern will pitch a “passion project,” whether an enterprise story, photo collage or Instagram story, to be completed by the end of the internship. Interns will be assigned a mentor and attend weekly sessions on sourcing and interview skills.
Sports Reporter – An intern in this role will report on Baltimore’s professional, college, and high school sports teams in an area where readers are heavy into sports. Interns will write a mix of enterprise and breaking news daily stories, some of which they will come up with on their own and some that will be assigned by editors. We ae looking for self-starters with good ideas who can tell compelling stories. Interns should be flexible and urgent, with a willingness to jump on any story assigned to them. They should be a team player who can help out on stories when other reporters need it. Ideal candidates should have strong writing skills, a passion for sports, and familiarity with social media platforms. News Reporter – As a News Reporter intern, you will cover an d array of topics— ranging from breaking news, local government, criminal justice and in-depth feature stories — allowing you to develop your reporting, writing and sourcing skills. . We are looking for interns who are quick thinkers, eager to chase stories, and ready to contribute fresh, “outside-the-box” ideas. You should have a natural curiosity and be open to feedback from editors and other reporters. While you will write your own stories, you may be asked to help other reporters on their stories as well. Interns will receive assignments from editors but are also encouraged to pitch their own story ideas.
As a Banner Intern, you will:
- Generate engaging content for The Baltimore Banner site, including stories, photos, and social media posts.
- Collaborate with other interns and editors to uncover and develop unique story ideas.
- Contribute to daily coverage, enterprise stories, and long-term projects.
- Utilize social media to engage readers and draw attention to your stories.
- Build a strong set of sources to provide insightful coverage.
