    Position Title:         Middle School Volleyball Coach
    Building:                 Ypsilanti Community Middle  Schools
    Reports to:              Athletic Director / Building Principal

    Coach will be required to be hired through EDUStaff

     
    SUMMARY:

    • The Coach establishes, coaches, monitors and maintains a successful sports program for the District working with student athletes to improve personal and teamwork skills.
    • The Coach also provides guidance and encouragement to help students profit from their participation in the program.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Complies with MHSAA policies and department/district policies.
    • Maintains an open line of communication with the Assistant Principal/Athletic Director and keeps them informed of the sporting program’s activities and problems.
    • Establishes and maintains a positive and effective self-image with athletics.
    • Attends clinics/workshops related to the sport and maintains appropriate certification and qualifications.
    • Utilizes sound teaching methods to develop skills/techniques.
    • Demonstrates public support and loyalty for coaches.
    • Develops life-long learning skills of student-athletes, including a focus on fair play and sportsmanship.
    •  Demonstrates effective management of pre-contest details. Fosters positive school-parent relations by maintaining communications with the student’s home regarding absences, grades, discipline, etc.
    • Establishes and utilizes an effective program to monitor players’ academic standing, both in season and out.
    •  Assists and promotes the athletes’ desires to participate at the collegiate level.
    • Works closely with parents to organize fundraising activities.
    •  Works collaboratively with “feeder” programs, including middle school, elementary and youth programs.
    • Works closely and positively with athletic trainer and parents to promote prevention of injuries using a sound training and conditioning program and ensures safe and proper time frames to return after injury.
    • Establishes a sound program of injury prevention and follow up.
    • Conducts a pre-season parent and athlete meeting as well as a post-season banquet.
    • Supervises and evaluates assistant coaches
    • . Creates clear practice plans to utilize time and space effectively.
    • Fosters a commitment among coaching staff and players to the District mission and vision statement.
    • Establishes an off-season workout schedule, summer activities, and fundamental skills camps to include high, middle and elementary school students.
    • Establishes guidelines for and oversees the entire sport program (middle school through varsity).
    • Actively provides and supports a healthy environment for student success academically and socially.
    • Consistently administers the Uniform Code of Student Conduct. Establishes and maintains favorable relationships with local community groups and individuals to foster understanding and solicit support for overall school objectives and programs.
    • Abides by all applicable rules, regulations, policies, procedures and statutes.
    • Acts as a public relations agent for the success and image of the district.
    • Participates in district and school initiatives.
    •  Regular predictable attendance.

     
    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

    • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
    • Valid Michigan teaching certificate preferred but not required.
    • Previous positive coaching experience as a varsity head coach.
    • Previous experience playing at the college level preferred, high school experience required.
    • Current CPR/First Aid/Lifeguard Certification for water related sports required or ability to obtain.
    • Knowledgeable about the rules and fundamental techniques required for the sport. Ability to work effectively with coaching staff, school staff and parents.
    • Agree to complete CAP 1 and CAP 2 (MHSAA Coaches Advancement Program) before the end of the season required.
    • Membership in sport specific coach’s association and participation in available coaching clinics.
    • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

     
    LANGUAGE SKILLS:

    • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students and the general public.
    • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
    • Ability to express self clearly, both orally and in writing.

     
    TECHNICAL SKILLS:

    • Knowledge of sport, equipment, facilities, rules, strategies, precautions, fundamental skills and advanced skills.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of a personal computer (PC) or MAC in a networked environment to utilize the Internet and other electronic communications mechanisms such as email, conferencing, bulletin boards, etc.
    •  Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

     
    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

    • Ability to apply the concepts of basic math, algebra and geometry consistent with the duties of this position.

     
    REASONING ABILITY:

    • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
    • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

     
    INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

    • Ability to build rapport with others and to serve diverse publics.
    •  Ability to take initiative; work well with others as a collaborative team member and exhibit good communication skills.
    • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with other departments, agencies and individuals.
