Seagate leads the industry in research and development and our digital storage solutions allow people the freedom to access their content anytime anywhere.  Seagate Recording Head Operations is searching for a graduating high school senior with an interest in learning more about manufacturing/engineering.  The Wafer Sustaining Engineering group brings together the fields/majors of Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Materials Science from a wide variety of backgrounds. This opportunity will give you exposure to these disciplines and more as you continue on in your own educational pursuits in a STEM related field. Our collaborative and innovative work environment, with a focus on continuous learning, provides an ideal setting for interns to gain hands-on experience and develop their skills. 


About the role – you will:

Every summer, we welcome four interns into the Sustaining Engineer organization at our high-tech manufacturing facility. Two of these interns are current college students who have just completed their first year towards a STEM degree and will be returning to school in the fall. These interns work four days a week, ten hours each day, with Fridays through Sundays off.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage in various roles, including technician and support engineering positions.
  • Work closely with a Sustaining Engineer to complete a project and to support the factory. A portion of your time will spent be working in a cleanroom environment.  
  • The Sustaining organization is currently working on projects to improve factory efficiency, to elevate engineering training, to build models in Solid Works, to deploy VR/AR solutions, and to automate work. We leverage Copilot, Power Automate and the Microsoft Suite. 
  • Work on multiple projects that align with your academic interests and career aspirations.
  • Update documentation with process engineers, engage in CAD design, create training materials, and program using a variety of coding languages.
  • Set up and operate a variety of state-of-the-art nanofabrication equipment and measurement instrumentation used in the production of the company’s products.
  • Monitor and audit production processes
  • Enhance your problem solving and data analysis skill sets as you work to resolve daily product and factory issues. With the rapid pace of our technology development, you will rarely face the same problem twice!
  • Test new equipment and document the results for engineering.
  • Responsible for activities in production area(s) to meet production goals, quality, and cost objectives.
  • Work from a process sheet or written/verbal instructions.​ 
  • Perform daily troubleshooting and evaluation of suspect wafers and processes. Operate machinery or computer devices to produce a product or service.
  • Analyze rework/scrap data to determine root cause and corrective action.​ 
  • Working in a team environment, you will be exposed to senior engineers and will have the opportunity to share your knowledge and learn from them.​
  • Works on assignments that are semi-routine in nature but recognizes the need for occasional deviation from accepted practice. Normally follow established procedures on routine work.​ 
  • Work with process technicians, engineers, maintenance, and operations employees to resolve factory and product issues 
  • Ensure proper passdown and process documentation is made and report to management of factory status including problems and potential problems.​  
  • Develop specialization aligned with a career interest

Daily and Weekly Support: 
Our managers play a crucial role in the success of our internship program. They conduct daily check-ins with the interns and hold weekly one-on-one meetings to provide guidance, feedback, and support. This consistent interaction helps interns stay on track with their projects and fosters a supportive learning environment.
 
The Culmination of the Internship: 
As the internship draws to a close, each intern gives a 15-minute presentation on their favorite project. This presentation focuses on what they learned and the personal value they derived from the experience. Additionally, our managers assist the interns in reviewing and updating their resumes, ensuring they leave with a polished and professional document that reflects their newfound skills and experiences.
 


About you:

  • Interested in manufacturing/engineering as a potential career path 
  • Must be 18 or older at the time of the start of the program 

Your experience includes:

  • Completed one year at a University, College, or Community College in Engineering or Science (Chemistry, Physics, or Math) and returning to school in the Fall 2025.

Our Normandale campus spans two suburbs, Edina and Bloomington, and serves as the Recording Head development and manufacturing arm of Seagate.
