Description

The Public Works Transportation Operations department is seeking two non-benefit earning interns to be a part of the program management group.

Location and hours:
These positions are hybrid and will be performed both on-site at the Public Works Facility located at 1600 Prairie Drive in Medina, MN 55340 and Osseo Maintenance Shop 8751 Jefferson Hwy, located at Osseo, MN 55369 or in a field environment within Hennepin County, and remote as job duties require. The Public Works Facility in Medina is not accessible by public transportation. These positions will start in January 2025 and last through August 2025 with the potential to extend on a case-by-case basis.  Interns are scheduled to work Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. While school is in session, interns will work 5-10 hours per week, with some flexibility on work schedules. In the summer, interns are scheduled to work 40 hours per week.

While these positions are designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.

The responsibilities of each position include but are not limited to the following:

Data Analytics (GIS): 
The preferred candidates will have a strong interest in transportation, data analysis/ geoanalytics and data collection. The program management data analytics intern will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Assist with database maintenance and report generation/analysis of the Pavement Management System (ICON software).
  • Assist with data input into the asset management system (ATOM software).  
  • Compile and process physical and digital data to develop metrics, perform cost analysis and develop annual reports.  
  • Assist with data management and mapping using Geographic Information System (ArcGIS) software.
  • Assist with data collection, field inspections and other field work as required.

Plan Development (Design): 
The preferred candidates will have a strong interest in construction and transportation. The program management plan development intern will be responsible for the following tasks

  • Assist in plan production using OpenRoads Technology.
  • Learn the fundamentals of OpenRoads software while producing maintenance projects.
  • Assist in entering and checking project estimates.
  • Create geometric alignments for pavement preservation projects.
  • Assist with data collection, field inspections and other field work as required.

Need to have:

  • Must be in one of the following:
    • Current enrollment in a vocational/technical or an undergraduate degree program in engineering, land surveying/highway engineering technology, civil engineering, geography, GIS, urban planning/studies or another related field.
    • Recent graduate (within 6 months) in in a vocational/technical or an undergraduate degree program in engineering, land surveying/highway engineering technology, civil engineering, geography, GIS, urban planning/studies or another related field. 
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver’s permit.
  • Reliable internet connection and self-support hybrid office space.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with:
    • Troubleshooting basic computer issues.
    • Math functions such as arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.
    • Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, ArcGIS or CAD and Adobe Acrobat.
    • Construction equipment, materials and methods.
  • Ability to:
    • Walk on uneven terrain; bend and stoop; work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
    • Communicate with staff at all levels of the organization, in person, and via email and phone.
