This job assignment receives administrative direction from the High School Principal, Assistant Principal (Director of Athletics), or other administrator as assigned.
Summary of Assignment
This job assignment is accountable for assisting the Athletic Director in directing and managing the overall program of extracurricular athletics for the District. This assignment provides leadership in the areas of instruction designed to develop appropriate skills, coaching techniques, and other related activities to the coaching staff. This assignment also works with coaches to provide each student with opportunity to participate in an extracurricular athletic activity and ensure compliance with all state, District, and local requirements.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Valid Illinois Driver’s License;
- Successful completion of a Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance;
- Successful completion of Bloodborne Pathogens Training/Hepatitis B Shots Series Training;
- Current teacher certification or substitute certification in the State of Illinois, or complete the American Sports Education Program (ASEP) coaching certification set forth by the Illinois High School Association (IHSA);
- May be required to obtain First Aid/CPR Certification.

- Knowledge of the State, Federal and School Board Policies and Regulations regarding student conduct and appropriate disciplinary action;

Essential Functions
The following identifies the primary and essential functions of the assignment and is not intended to be an exhaustive listing of all duties.
- Approves and forwards purchase orders to the Director for consideration;
- Articulates the District’s mission and goals in the area of athletics to community and solicit its support in realizing mission;
- Assists Director with administering the athletic budget and ensuring that programs are cost effective and that funds are managed prudently;
- Assists Director with compiling budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs;
- Assists Director with establishing physical and academic eligibility requirements for participation in each sport, and verify each athlete’s eligibility;
- Assists Director with planning, organizing, and supervising all athletic programs on a seasonal basis;
- Assists in coordinating the use of all athletic facilities by non-school groups;
- Assists in overseeing process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all athletic equipment;
- Assists operations by contacting game officials, and ensuring preparation of facilities;
- Compiles, maintains, files, and presents all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required;
- Demonstrates awareness of District and community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs;
- Establishes and maintains open lines of communication by conducting conferences on vital issues with parents, students, and teachers;
- Handles administrative details associated with the District’s athletic program for the Director of Athletics;
- Implements District student management policies, communicates expected student behavior related to athletics, and ensures enforcement of student discipline in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook;
- Implements the policies established by federal law, state law, Illinois State Board of Education rules, Illinois High School Association (IHSA) rules, and local board policy in area of athletics;
- Initiates purchase orders and bids in accordance with budgetary limitations and district policies;
- Maintains a current inventory of supplies and equipment and recommends disposal and replacement of equipment when necessary;
- Maintains an active program that promotes good sportsmanship and student development;
- Obtains and uses evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to gauge athletic program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responsive to student needs;
- Plans necessary time, resources, and materials to support accomplishment of department goals;
- Supervises and evaluates the performance of coaches and support staff for assigned season;
- Supports athletic booster club activities;
- Uses appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement;
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Physical and Mental Requirements
Individuals appointed to these assignments must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the assignment.
