Geriatrics Division Chief, Department of Internal Medicine Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah and Executive Director, University of Utah Center on Aging The University of Utah seeks a geriatrician leader to serve as the Chief for the Geriatrics Division in the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine’s Department of Internal Medicine and Director of its Center on Aging. This is a remarkable opportunity for a dynamic academic leader to further the growth, innovation, and diversity of this vibrant program’s research, clinical, educational, and other programmatic missions. The Geriatrics Division’s mission is to improve the health, independence and quality of life for older adults. As an Age-Friendly Health System – Committed to Care Excellence, our goal is to ensure that every University of Utah Health patient receives care that addresses each of the geriatric 4MS – What Matters, Mobility, Medications, and Mentation. The Division benefits from a seamless relationship with the VA Salt Lake City Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center ( GRECC ). The Division includes 29 faculty members – 21 physicians and eight PhD research faculty – two Advance Practice Clinicians, and 50 administrative and research staff. Its FY23 operating budget totals $6.3 million dollars. University of Utah Health has ranked in the top 10 of the prestigious Vizient Quality Leadership Award for the last 13 years. The University of Utah is also a Top-Tier 1 research university and a member of the Association of American Universities. Its research funding was $686 million in FY22. Its research community is highly collaborative across 18 colleges, 35 interdisciplinary programs, and 100 academic departments and divisions. Research activities in the Geriatrics Division are supported by $7 million dollars of annual extramural research funding and through the GRECC . Dr. Randal Rupper was appointed the GRECC Director in 2022. The GRECC is funded with an annual recurring budget of approximately $1.6 M. Its well-established research programs include the Utah Vascular Research Lab and the Translational Vascular Physiology Lab. Building from this solid research foundation, applicants can expect resources needed to further expand research in the Geriatrics Division. Clinical activities include a geriatrics patient-centered medical home clinic with specialty clinical programs including Aging Brain Care and Fall Evaluation programs, medical directorship of the Utah State Veterans home, and both inpatient geriatrics consultation and a Hospital Elder Life Program ( HELP ). Twenty-four clinicians provide outpatient services and inpatient consultations at five locations in the Salt Lake Valley. Educational activities include a medical student fourth-year clerkship, a required rotation for the internal medicine residency program, an ACGME -accredited clinical fellowship with three fellows appointed each year, a NHLBI -funded T32 training grant, and a VA GRECC Advanced Geriatric Fellowship track. In addition, many Division faculty support the Utah Geriatric Education Center ( UGEC ), a HRSA -funded Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program. Center on Aging The University of Utah Center on Aging’s ( www.aging.utah.edu ) Executive Director leads a “One U,” campus-wide program with more than 200 faculty members devoted to interdisciplinary aging research and supports interprofessional clinical and training programs including the Gerontology Interdisciplinary Program ( www.nursing.utah.edu/programs/gerontology ), the Age-Friendly Health System initiative, and community engagement through the Utah state-funded Governor’s Commission on Aging ( www.ucoa.utah.edu ). The Executive Director reports directly to the Health Sciences and Academic Affairs Senior Vice Presidents. These research efforts are supported by a University of Utah total annual external funding directed to aging research that is more than $25 million. Requirements The successful candidate will be a practicing geriatrician with a national reputation reflecting a strong record of federal funding, scholarly accomplishments, clinical leadership, and progressive administrative experience. Demonstration of leadership capacity and ability to communicate effectively are essential. The position will entail engagement with individuals representing multiple disciplines across a variety of operational and investigative roles. There will be abundant opportunities and resources to enhance and increase the Division’s research enterprise. The Chief will work closely with the Chair of Internal Medicine to promote a collaborative environment that enhances clinical growth and academic development, and advances research consistent with Department and Institutional missions. The ideal candidate will be a strategic leader who promotes institutional stewardship throughout University of Utah Health and the University of Utah. Candidates should qualify for the appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level on the Tenure Track at the University of Utah, must be board certified in Geriatrics, and must be eligible for a renewable medical license in the State of Utah.
