Position Summary:

To support student academic, identity, and leadership development through designing, implementing, and evaluating specialized programs and activities for students and the University community, and to collaborate with other UI departments in coordinating University-wide multicultural programs and activities.

Job Specific Duties & Tasks:

  • Serve as the advisor for assigned registered multicultural student organizations for domestic students of color, international students, and other historically underrepresented students, including but not limited to Native American Student Association (NASA), Asian Pacific American Student Association (APASA), Association of Latinos Moving Ahead (ALMA), Black Student Union (BSU), Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA), Spectrum UI, Indian Student Alliance (ISA), Organization for the Active Support of International Students (OASIS), TransCollaborations, and cultural-based fraternities and sororities among the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) and National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)
  • Act as facilitator and program presenter for registered student organizations, University departments, and affiliated organizations/conferences as appropriate
  • Communicate, interpret, and enforce appropriate university policy
  • Assist student organizations in policy/procedure development and implementation
  • Continue the development and assessment of student life and Multicultural and International Student Support and Engagement programming to enhance student learning and achievement, both in and outside the classroom
  • Develop measurable learning outcomes for and conduct assessments of both staff-sponsored and student-sponsored programs and activities
  • Promote, coordinate, and evaluate ongoing programs and activities at the UI Cultural Centers; seek out opportunities for collaboration among registered student organizations, university departments, and other local constituents in programming
  • Advise registered multicultural and international student organization executive board members on the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and activities
  • Chair or serve on relevant committees as assigned (e.g., The Mirage, UI Martin Luther King, Jr. Human Rights Celebration Planning Committee, MY IOWA: Multicultural and International Student Leadership Summit Executive Committee, and Iowa Edge Executive Committee, Celebration and Heritage Months, Center Anniversaries, and other special events pertaining to assigned Center)
  • Assist in the administrative coordination for the Centers (Afro-American Cultural Center, Asian Pacific American Cultural Center, Latino Native American Cultural Center, and Pride Alliance Center)
  • In collaboration with the assistant director, supervise graduate assistants, practicum students, and hourly employees as assigned
  • Exercise fiscal and budget coordination for the Centers (Afro-American Cultural Center, Asian Pacific American Cultural Center, Latino Native American Cultural Center, and Pride Alliance Center)
  • Assist student leaders in developing sound fiscal practices involving university funds

About MISSE:

Multicultural and International Student Support and Engagement (MISSE) is committed to supporting student success on the University of Iowa campus through planned activities through the five MISSE areas, annual diversity programs, and student organization events. There are over 100 multicultural student organizations at the University of Iowa that provide programming, service, educational programs, and cultural experiences to the campus community.

Within MISSE, the four UI Cultural Centers provide a “Home Away From Home” atmosphere for many students and can be utilized by any UI student or reserved for student organization events. The Centers also provide intra-and cross-cultural education, leadership and organizational development opportunities, education, and change. The Centers compliment the academic mission of the University by enhancing students’ inside and outside of the classroom.

The Division of Student Life includes 15 departments that span from Recreation Services to the Office of Leadership and Engagement and everything in between. Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and related experience
  • Reasonable (typically 1-3 years) experience working in higher education in advising, developing, coordinating, and evaluating student life and campus activities programming with progressive experience in multicultural engagement
  • Experience with creating a welcoming and respectful work environment as well as experience working with students of color, international students, other historically underrepresented students, and/or students with a variety of backgrounds and perspectives
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with standard office computer applications
  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends

Highly Desirable Qualification:

  • Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Student Development, or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and related experience

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Reasonable (typically 1-3 years) experience in the design, implementation, and evaluation of multicultural programs and activities
  • Reasonable (typically 1-3 years) experience in negotiation of contractual agreements in the areas of university cultural, recreational, entertainment, and service-oriented programming
  • Reasonable (typically 1-3 years) experience in assessing and evaluating programs and in conducting quantitative and qualitative research
  • Knowledge of university policies, procedures, and regulations
