Job Description

Summary: The Assistant Director for Athletic Communications aids the Assistant Athletics Director for Communications with all aspects of communication for a robust NCAA DI level athletic communications department.

A leading NCAA program and member of the ASUN Conference located in Charlotte, N.C., Queens has been competing in co-ed intercollegiate athletics for 30-plus years. Distinguished by its commitment to nurturing excellence through a purposeful process, Queens Athletics intentionally promotes a unique experience that leads to success as the Royals deliver sustainable performances at or above a 3.3 GPA in the classroom. Prior to the start of the program’s transition to DI, Queens ranked in the top 10 of the Learfield Directors’ Cup for five consecutive years.

Housing a diverse portfolio of varsity-level sports, Queens athletes represent nearly 50 countries. The Royals hold 28 team national championship trophies, 144 individual national titles, and 103 conference tournament championships. Queens produces professional athletes and is an Olympians and Paralympians Made Here designated institution.

The position includes being a primary contact for several assigned sports.

This position reports to Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Communication. This position is exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is not eligible to earn overtime pay or compensatory time off for additional hours worked over 40 in a week. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Serve as the primary communications contact for assigned sports, handling writing and editing press releases, graphic design and social media communications. Oversee game-day operations from the communications arm of the department for assigned sports.
  • Assist in coordinating daily media relations tasks for sports assigned
  • Develop and produce creative content (graphics and video) for social media accounts pertaining to sports assigned
  • Generate content for the athletics web site (queensathletics.com) that is designed to promote the overall message of the Athletics department.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with members of the media to ensure optimal coverage of student-athletes and athletics department as a whole.
  • Assist in the department’s marketing efforts
  • Represent the department and the University, both internally and externally, on various committees as necessary and appropriate.
  • Maintain statistical data and archives for sports assigned.

Non-Essential Duties:

  • Other duties and special projects may be assigned to meet department and University needs.

Qualifications

Experience, Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • 1-2 years’ experience in an intercollegiate athletics communications office (including as a student assistant or intern).
  • Strong computer skills along with excellent written and oral communication skills. Knowledge of AP style.
  • Ability to follow-up and follow-through to ensure completion of challenging goals and objectives.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively towards team objectives.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Photography, videography, and video editing skills preferred
  • Proficiency with various software, including Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience working with Stat Crew or NCAA Live Stats software
  • Experience with Sidearm Sports or similar content management system
  • Experience as a primary sport contact in a collegiate athletics communication setting preferred.
  • Willingness and ability to work nights and weekends and travel regularly with assigned teams to achieve objectives of the position.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in communications, sport management or journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
