General Description of Duties
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
To assist Development Services in serving property owners, residents, and land development professionals by ensuring that all land development proposals are approved consistent with adopted regulations.  To ensure the continued vitality of the community including both the natural and built environments by promoting awareness and compliance with adopted growth management ordinances and policies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Research property information utilizing the Leon County Property Appraiser’s Database, GIS, Accela, DigiPlan, DSEM mapping records, plats and Clerk of Courts records. Research permit records to obtain information regarding prior development approvals.
 
Assist staff in the research and analysis of special projects including field visits when necessary.
 
Assist in providing basic GIS mapping services to Development Services, including ensuring consistency in mapping records, including GIS data. Assist staff in the updating of DSEM’s mapping and property records.  

Assist staff with required mailouts for public notification, updates to electronic databases and logs, and with the setup of meetings and recordings.
 
OTHER IMPORTANT OR MARGINAL DUTIES
None.
 
DIFFICULTY  
Exercises sound independent judgment, including the ability to perform basic duties such as research and distribution of documents to other staff/agencies with minimal supervision.  Work requires initiative and creativity while obtaining research information.  Must be able to follow established deadlines and work hours. Must be able to accomplish numerous tasks within deadline constraints.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CUSTOMER CONTACT
These contacts consist of Building Inspection Staff, Clerk’s Office, PLACE/City GEM, Property Appraiser, and Leon County Public Health.  Contact is also made with property owners, citizens’ groups, and homeowners’ associations for information related to land development regulation.
 
EQUIPMMENTAND TOOLS USED
Personal computer, word processing software, spreadsheets, GIS, Accela, DigiPlan,  fax machine, adding machine/basic calculator, scientific calculator, car and/or light truck.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSCIAL DEMANDS
Work mainly indoors. Work usually seated in a chair. Work mainly at a desk. Work mainly in one location. 
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES 
Must be able to follow established deadlines and work hours, be able to perform basic duties such as research and distribution of documents to other staff/agencies with minimal supervision, and be able to perform basic tasks such as taking notes and research.  Knowledge of GIS systems is preferred.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Must be enrolled in an Undergraduate or Master’s program in the area of urban planning, civil or environmental engineering, geography, landscape architecture, geology or other environmental science related field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
Necessary Special Requirements
 
Selection Guidelines:
Formal application, rating of education and experience, oral interview, reference check, and drug testing.

FLSA STATUS:  Position is Non-Exempt.  The Intern is hired to perform professional (entry) level work in various administrative fields.
