The Communications unit in the Division of Communications and Marketing provides news about ACS, and it communicates the vital role of chemical professionals and the chemical sciences in solving critical global challenges and improving everyday life. It creates press releases, videos, podcasts, live virtual events, and social media posts that tell chemistry stories to educate and entertain its audiences.

 

Position Summary

The science communications intern will work closely with the ACS newsroom team to write and edit science releases based on research published in ACS journals and meeting releases based on research presented at ACS Fall 2025. The releases promote ACS as the go-to source for accurate and entertaining chemistry news for journalists and the public. If there is interest and availability, this role could also involve working with the video production and social media teams. The ideal candidate is passionate about science and storytelling and will have experience translating scientific content (verbally and/or visually) for a general audience.

1) Write and/or edit science releases based on research published in ACS peer-reviewed journals.

2) Write and/or edit meeting releases based on research presented at ACS Fall 2025.

3) Assist the production team with video projects, including Headline Science videos.

4) Assist the social media team with content across ACS social media platforms to increase engagement

 

Education Requirements:

The ideal candidate will be a rising college senior, recent graduate or pursuing a Masters/ PhD in Science communications/science writing

 

Required Qualifications:

Currently pursuing a major in science communications/science writing.

Pay Transparency: This role is based in our Washington, D.C. office. The following are the intended hourly rates for this part time/nonexempt role: Rising Junior-$23.00; Rising Senior-$24.00; Current Grad/PhD Student- $27.00.

Any actual offer of employment, reflecting the total compensation package and benefits, will be made in the sole discretion of ACS. ACS reserves the right to amend or modify its employment benefits and compensation structure at any time.

 

*This position will be primarily based in the Washington D.C. (or applicable) office. ACS employees work a hybrid work schedule, consisting of working onsite, two days per week. Schedule flexibility may be required for this role to support in-office activities. While always welcome to work in the office, employees may work the other three days of the week from a location of their choice.
