Who we are: Youth Music Project (YMP) is a band of inspired, engaged and encouraging educators, musicians, administrators, board members and volunteers who believe that every student deserves access to exceptional music education, regardless of family income level. YMP provides music instruction to thousands of children every year via year-round after-school group classes, private lessons, early childhood classes, field trips, partnerships, and summer camps. Over 40% of annual enrollments are made possible thanks to our donor supported tuition assistance fund, providing access to hundreds of children and families each year who otherwise could not afford it.
Position Summary
Teen Interns assist in YMP’s innovative educational programs for children and youth in Clackamas County and the surrounding communities. Duties include assisting music instructors in group classes and summer camps, supporting concert weeks, open mics, events, developing social media content and more.
Things you’ll get to do:
- Actively participate and support music instructors in afterschool and weekend music instruction and classroom management for group classes for kids aged 1-18.
- Assist with student check-ins during the first week of each term.
- Assist during concert weeks at the end of each quarterly term (Fall, Winter, Spring, & Summer) in one of the following roles: Emcee, Stagehand, Backstage/Usher
- Lead Youth Open Mics on the first Friday of each month.
- Work in week-long Summer Day Camps from June – August.
- Complete professional development projects with your fellow intern cohort
- Join the Intern Band, a gigging ensemble led by one of YMP’s professional Instructors
- Other duties as assigned, which may include but are not limited to the following:
- Assisting the front desk
- Maintaining the cleanliness of the facility after events (vacuuming, trash sweep, etc.)
- Attend weekly professional development meetings for interns
Things you’ll get to learn:
- Group management, instruction, and problem-solving skills while working with YMP’s professional instructors.
- New music skills such as how to play new instruments, set-up sound equipment, provide stage support for concerts, and more.
- Event, concert, music and video production and execution.
- Public speaking, communication, and customer service skills.
- General knowledge for working in a nonprofit organization.
Education and Experience
Qualifications you’ll need
- Interest in providing music education to youth
- Positive outlook and collaborative disposition
- Proficiency in at least one of YMP’s primary instruments – piano, guitar, ukulele, drums, bass, voice, guitar. Experience with multiple instruments preferred.
- Availability to work approximately 10-12 hours a week supporting approximately 4 group classes plus an hour of administrative support (hours vary based on enrollment need)
- Ability to be at work on-time for scheduled classes, and give adequate notice for any absences
- Ability to arrange for transportation to and from YMP’s facility in West Linn
- Ability to promptly respond to work email/text correspondence
- Ability to pass a criminal background check
- Must be at least 16 years old to apply
Other knowledge, skills & abilities we’d like you to have:
- Ability to commit to a two-year internship beginning the summer preceding your junior year in high school preferred
- Experience working with both children and families
- Bilingual in English and Spanish

Your wage: $15.95 per hour

Physical demands: This job is primarily performed in a classroom environment, that involves stationary (sitting) work approximately 50 percent of the time and requires ambulating the remainder of the time; regular and frequent musical instrument work and work with other office equipment; frequent communication with staff, students, and the public, and occasional lifting and/or moving of up to 40-45 pounds.
