Job Description:

UF Information Technology (UFIT) is seeking two talented and highly motivated, part-time Support and Applications Interns to join Research Computing, a unit within UFIT, for the summer semester. The interns will assist with UF Research Computing user support, ticket triage, application installation, and support tool development. The interns will work with Research Computing facilitators, systems staff, and customers as needed. This paid internship is designed to provide students currently enrolled in college an opportunity to learn practical skills and gain experience to propel you into a successful career in Information Technology.

Employment with UFIT provides an excellent opportunity to work with other employees dedicated and focused on understanding and interpreting the technological needs of the University of Florida’s innovative and inspirational community.

Since all work will take place in the RC support system, HiPerGator, and RC user documentation wiki interns will be able to combine remote work and in-person presence in the RC Support office space in the New Physics Building.

Some key responsibilities and characteristics of this position are:

  • Support service request/ticket triage
  • Answer basic support questions via ticketing system, slack, Zoom
  • Install research applications on HiPerGator
  • Participate in the development of support-related scripts/tools/web applications

Some key learning outcomes for the student intern are:

  • Practical understanding of contemporary research computing
  • HPC application installation skills
  • Troubleshooting application code
  • Programming experience (support tool and web app development)
  • Demonstrate openness, inclusiveness, sensitivity, and the ability to interact respectfully with all people and understand individuals’ differences
  • Identify, write down, and carry out performance objectives (mutually agreed upon by the employer, the UFIT experiential learning supervisor, and the student) related to the practical experience in their internship

Expected Salary:

$18.00 per hour

Minimum Requirements:

UF Student Assistant
This position is open to all students who are eligible to work on campus and will be employed through student Other Personnel Services (OPS) and must maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average.

OPS Intern
High School diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will posses the following experience and skills:

  • Strong communication skills
  • Familiarity with Linux and command-line use
  • Research or programming experience (python preferred) is a plus
  • HiPerGator use experience a plus
