After School Matters provides Chicago high school teens with high quality, after-school and summer opportunities to explore and develop their talents while gaining critical skills for work, college and beyond. Since 1991, more than 350,000 teens have participated in our hands-on, project-based after-school and summer programs in the arts, communications and leadership, sports and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Programs take place at locations throughout the city including Chicago public high schools, Chicago Park District and Chicago Public Library locations, community organizations, downtown at the Gallery 37 Center for the Arts, in Belmont Cragin at our Michael and Karyn Lutz Center for After School Matters, and in the Pullman community at the new Gately Center for After School Matters. Summary of Position:
This position will support the Legal Department with a wide range of projects related to risk management, compliance, and legal research, including developing compliance checklist, drafting policies and procedures and related memoranda/reports, providing administrative and back-up support and other related projects. This position is a good fit for someone who writes well and is detail oriented and interested in learning about not for profit risk management and introductory legal research and theory.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Research legal topics and provide a report/memo on the findings
  • Assist with Privacy and Information Security issues
  • Assist with the creation of compliance site visit forms and risk management checklists
  • Assist with insurance claim inquiries (follow-up with emails, tracking claims, etc.)
  • Legal tracking (incident reporting, saving background checks, renewal dates for licenses, garnishments, etc.)
  • Update policies and procedures
  • Create one pagers re: legal and/or risk management topics and/or guidance 
  • Generate reports (e.g., incident reports, etc.)  on an as-needed basis
  • Assist and/or conduct compliance assessments and other compliance site visits for community providers
  • Complete manual data entry when required
  • Support team with administrative tasks (e.g. copying, scanning)
  • Act as a back-up for the Receptionist desk
  • When needed, assist with teen application and other Program Quality and Compliance department assignments when the volume  is high
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Must be currently enrolled as a college student or graduate/law school student
