Introduction

Johns Hopkins University is seeking an engaged, strategic, and collaborative individual to partner with the new Dean of the Sheridan Libraries, Archives, and Museums to provide an effective philanthropic and communications program. The position will benefit from a strong, well-established program, but will have the opportunity to also identify new networks for support and new avenues for advocacy that match the innovative work being done in the Libraries and Museums.

Reporting to the Sheridan Dean of University Libraries, Archives, and Museums, and the Senior Associate Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations, the Associate Dean for External Affairs is responsible for the implementation of all fundraising and external communications strategies and activities, and for the advancement of the vision and priorities of the Sheridan Libraries & University Museums.

The Associate Dean is a key member of the Dean’s senior administrative council, advises and staffs the Dean and department managers on matters of development and external affairs, and serves as a primary point of contact to the external community on the positioning of development programs.

The Sheridan Libraries encompass Milton S. Eisenhower Library, Brody Learning Commons, John Work Garrett Library, George Peabody Library, and Albert D. Hutzler Reading Room; a sixth library will be added in Fall 2023 when the university opens its new Washington, DC campus at 555 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. Sheridan collections include more than 4.8 million physical volumes and electronic resources that provide access to 1.6 million ebooks and more than 171,000 print and e-journals; Sheridan Libraries Special Collections boasts 400,000 rare books, including 300,000 volumes held at George Peabody Library, a non-circulating special collections library open to the public and consistently ranked as one of the most beautiful libraries in the world.

The University Museums encompass Homewood Museum and Evergreen Museum & Library, two historic house museums that are located along Baltimore’s Charles Street corridor and have similar origins as residences for prominent Maryland families. Each museum interprets distinct historical eras and aesthetic styles, and together they present new scholarship and diverse narratives about the development of Baltimore and America from 1800 to 1950.

The Associate Dean manages an external affairs team of eight (8), managing the office budget, planning and conducting all aspects of private sector fundraising, including orchestration of major fundraising campaigns and other related programmatic activities. These efforts include annual, major, and principal gifts solicitations and strategy, constituent engagement, stewardship, advisory board meetings, and numerous special events. The Associate Dean also oversees the communications strategy for the division including strategic communications, external and internal messaging, and integrated communication services across a variety of digital and print platforms including the Sheridan Libraries and University Museums websites, official social media channels, and messages from the Dean.

The external affairs team includes a Director of Development, a Director of Communications and Marketing, two Associate Directors of Development, an Assistant Director of Communications and Marketing, a Grants Coordinator (part-time), and two Development Coordinators.

The Associate Dean supports three advisory boards: the Sheridan Libraries Advisory Board, the Friends of the Libraries Advisory Board, and the Homewood Museum Advisory Board, managing recruitment and engagement of new volunteer members to advance the priorities of the Sheridan Libraries & University Museums. The incumbent also works closely with colleagues at all divisions to harness collaborative fundraising opportunities across Johns Hopkins University and Medicine.

Primary Responsibilities


1. Manage an active portfolio of major and principal gift prospects aligned with financial and non-financial work plan goals.

2. Provide overall strategic leadership for external affairs for the Sheridan Libraries and University Museums.

  • Increase philanthropic revenue from individuals, alumni, and foundations by developing and executing effective team strategies that support the Sheridan Libraries and University Museums and priorities.
  • Lead the evaluation, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major and principal gift prospects and donors.
  • Lead a communications strategy that engages stakeholders in understanding the expanding scope of activities and services in the Libraries, Archives, and Museums
  • Directly supervise four (4) team members and lead a total team of eight (8). Manage a staff of professional fundraisers and support personnel in the annual work plans and goal setting. Evaluate progress accordingly.
  • Cultivate an accessible and inclusive work environment and a staff that can work effectively with diverse individuals.
  • Manage and oversee all constituent engagement activities.

3. Manage the campaign planning process for the Sheridan Libraries and University Museums and ensure that fiscal goals and priorities are achieved.

  • In concert with the Dean, establish future campaign priorities and budgets.
  • Lead efforts to identify new prospects and develop the prospect pipeline, engaging academic leaders and key volunteers in the process.
  • Develop outreach and communications strategies.

4. Actively participate in the Sheridan Libraries and University Museum’s leadership team, led by the Dean, and contribute to overall strategic planning, resource management, and policies. Work closely with the Dean and department managers to develop philanthropic support and priorities for the Libraries and Museums.

5. Sit on the Johns Hopkins University Development and Alumni Relations Management Team.

6. Operate with a high degree of fiscal responsibility. Work closely with the Senior Associate Dean of Finance and Administration to prepare the department budget and to provide budget management and oversight of all development budgets while providing financial forecasts and projections.

7. Demonstrate willingness and ability to travel and work a flexible schedule.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Ten or more years of progressively responsible fundraising experience. Higher education fundraising experience is strongly preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven ability to close major and principal gifts.
  • Experience in multifaceted capital campaign planning and implementation strategies.
  • Ability to mentor and manage development and communications professionals and administrative staff.
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to using of information technology and the management and understanding of data systems.
  • Aptitude in business and financial acumen; ability to manage budgets and conduct financial analysis to include financial forecasts and projections.
