The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a College Intern 1/2 Flex located in Palmer!

What you will be doing:
The College Intern 1 or 2 will assist with the development and implementation of education and outreach programs and materials for the Division’s Wildlife Education Program. The intern may work with program staff to develop publications, videos, and content for distribution via social media and the department’s website. The College Intern will also provide presentations (both in-person and virtual) to the public on wildlife and wildlife management-related topics.

This position provides an excellent training opportunity for students pursuing communications, education, wildlife, biology, or natural resource management studies, as well as general experience in public speaking, teaching, event coordination, and curriculum development. The intern will gain knowledge in wildlife biology and principles of wildlife management and research.

The working conditions you can expect:
This position is based out of the Palmer Fish and Game office. The intern will share a large, enclosed office with wildlife education and outreach staff.

Who we are looking for:
We are looking for and individuals with the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  1. Academic or work history in the outdoor education, conservation education, natural history interpretation or wildlife-related fields.
  2. Knowledge and experience with Alaska’s wildlife and habitats. 
  3. Demonstrated public speaking and writing skills. 
  4. Experience developing educational and outreach materials such as curricula, brochures, newsletters, displays, videos, podcasts, and social media posts. 
  5. Some experience with Microsoft Office, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and/or Premiere computer software programs.

Minimum Qualifications

College Intern 1
Currently accepted, enrolled, and attending an accredited college in an undergraduate degree program while maintaining an academic load of at least six credit hours per semester (eight credit hours per quarter).

Special Note:
Academic transcripts and/or tuition billings may be construed as proof of enrollment.

Appointment and retention in this class series is restricted to students actively pursuing an undergraduate degree program in an accredited college and maintaining an academic load of at least six semester (eight quarter) credit hours per semester (quarter).

Students who have completed spring semester courses and are enrolled in fall semester courses are considered to be attending college during the summer regardless of whether or not summer courses are taken.

College Intern 2
Currently accepted, enrolled, and attending an accredited college in an undergraduate degree program while maintaining an academic load of at least six credit hours per semester (eight credit hours per quarter);
AND
In good standing with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher;
AND
Have successfully completed training as a College Intern 1 or 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of coursework in the degree program.

Special Note:
Academic transcripts and/or tuition billings may be construed as proof of enrollment.

Appointment and retention in this class series is restricted to students actively pursuing an undergraduate degree program in an accredited college and maintaining an academic load of at least six semester (eight quarter) credit hours per semester (quarter).

Additional Required Information

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
If selected, please provide the following at the time of the interview:

  1. Educational transcripts to show that they are enrolled in a University of Alaska campus.
  2. Candidates must respond to five supplemental questions, highlighting their knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience as they pertain to the job description.
  3. Applicants may bring two or three examples of educational materials where they are the primary author or developer.

College Intern
The College Intern position is intended for students currently accepted, enrolled, and attending an accredited post-secondary college in an undergraduate degree program.

In your application, you should:

  • Document your GPA, and
  • Describe your relevant education and work or volunteer experiences as they pertain to the job description above.
  • Provide any other information requested in the job description

In addition, your application will be reviewed to determine if you possess the experience and strengths we are seeking in an employee.
