Role:
Chemical Hygiene Officers assist in monitoring and implementing the Chemical Hygiene Plan in Farmington Area Public Schools (the High School and Middle Schools).
General Principles of Chemical Hygiene / Laboratory Safety Are:
1. Minimize all chemical exposures. Use the least quantity of material necessary to demonstrate the principle of the experiment. When possible, substitute a less hazardous chemical.
2. Assume all chemicals have potential toxicity and minimize their use when feasible.
3. Provide adequate ventilation by the use of hoods and other ventilation devices.
4. Implement and maintain a Chemical Hygiene Plan.
5. Observe permissible exposure limits (PELs) and threshold limit values (TLV’s).
Chemical Hygiene Officer’s Qualifications and Responsibilities Include (but not limited to):
- Appropriately licensed and practicing science teacher assigned to the building for which the CHO position is posted.
- Work in close partnership with Director of Operations and Health and Safety consultant staff to perform necessary duties.
- Monitor procurement and use of chemicals used in the lab.
- Institute appropriate work practices, procedures, and engineering controls.
- Inform and train employees so that they are knowledgeable and follow the Chemical Hygiene plan.
- Maintain laboratory and chemical storage facilities.
- Oversee rules and practices regarding procurement, distribution, and storage of chemicals.
- Provide personnel with appropriate personal protective equipment and safety devices obtained from Director of Operations.
- Maintain record keeping system (for accidents, spills, training, SDS, inspections, etc.).
- Post labels and signs
- Ensure regulatory compliance of laboratory equipment (i.e. eyewash and fume hood inspections) to ensure safe operation.
- Ensure all SDS forms are available and current.
